Facilities of the Faculty
Field Science Center

The Field Science Center, established in 2001, integrates three former facilities, the University Farms, the University Forests and the Fisheries Research Laboratory. The Center consists of
three divisions, the Ecological Agriculture Division, the Food Science Division, and the Environmental Science Division, and seeks to promote the education and research about the coordination of bio-production and the earth environment.
The Center has four field stations, the Kibana Agricultural Science Station, Sumiyoshi Livestock Science Station, Tano Forest Science Station, and Nobeoka Marine Science Station. The four stations are used to effectively implement education and research programs by practice and experimental courses of the faculty.
Kibana Agricultural Science Station
On the Campus Farm, there are 6 ha of paddy field and 17 ha of fields adjacent to the campus. Therefore, it is very convenient for students to do experiments and field training. The entire staff uses the fields and facilities for their experiments.
The paddy field has been generously divided into sections of 3 ha. Each in the paddy field and in the rice Processing center, modern and labour-saving methods including mechanization of integrated work, are carried out. In the fields, there are many greenhouses, an open vegetable garden, a flower garden, an orchard, and a plant specimenfs garden etc.
In the Campus Farm, in order for the students to be able to learn the fundamentals of farming in which agricultural theory is synthesized, to demonstrate modern farming technology, such as solution culture for vegetables by computer controlled systems, the curriculum of the technical education is associated with classroom instruction.
Research is carried out on the improvement of agricultural techniques for field crops in the predominant climate of southern Kyushu.
Sumiyoshi Livestock Science Station
The station is located at the northeast part of Miyazaki City, 25 km apart from the campus.
The facility was founded in 1929 and now covers a total area of 50.4 ha, including 39.6 ha of cultivated fields and grassland and 5,898m2 of buildings. Approximately 20 dairy cows, 120 beef cattle and 20 sheep are reared in this ranch each year. The station is used to establish and investigate management systems for grassland and animal production that make good use of local characteristics. It also provides practical experience to students from the Departments of Plant and Animal Sciences and Biological Production and Environmental Sciences as well as from Veterinary Science, the Vocational Course of Animal Production, and for the staff of the Ranch and the related departments in the study of productivity of dairy and beef cattle and subtropical grasses in lowland warm climates.
Nobeoka Marine Science Station
The station is located in Nobeoka City, northern area of Miyazaki Prefecture. It is about
100 km apart from the main campus. It serves as a facility for practical studies on the development and the utilization of fisheries resources and also as a training center for undergraduate and overgraduate students. Boats, several sizes of tanks, other instruments in the laboratory and accommodations are available. Research subjects of the laboratory at the present time include ecological studies on fish production and related projects.
Tano Forest Science Station
The station was established in 1937, and since then has been used
to carry out education and research in forestry. In many forests, field training for students in forest science is carried out more than 30days a year.
The principal research subjects are as follows : (1) biogeochemistry of forest ecosystem, (2) silvicultural study of multi-layered Hinoki plantation, (3) long term ecological research of evergreen broad-leaved forest, (4) management of broad-leaved forests, (5) influence of acid precipitation on forest ecosystem.
Area : 502 ha in Tano Area and 118 ha in Ohno and Sakita Area
Veterinary Teaching Hospital
The Veterinary Teaching Hospital was established in 1953 with the
aim of promoting clinical practice, education and research in veterinary medicine. Since then, the hospital has contributed much to the realization of that purpose. In 1985, the hospital moved to the new campus, and was expanded and strengthened by the addition of modern facilities such as ultrasonic and X-ray equipments, for large animals, etc., in order to meet the demands of current research development.
Agricultural Museum
The Agricultural Museum is located in the main campus of University of Miyazaki. Inside the museum are exhibited various kinds of specimens, for example, native wildlife and fish, skeletons of mammals, blocks of timber, bamboo, seeds of trees, fossils of animals and plants, farming machines of old and modern types, and sections of typical soil composition from Miyazaki area. Not only the Museum is available for the study and research of the Faculty and students of the University, but also is daily opened to the public, except Saturday, Sunday and holidays.
